According to the International Labor Organization, 49.6 million people are estimated to be living in modern-day slavery worldwide. Each of our partners works to fight human trafficking through initiatives that may include prevention and education efforts, survivor recovery, restoration and reintegration/job opportunities.
Today, we highlight Ho’ōla Nā Pua, an organization that helps prevent child sex trafficking and provide care for children who have been exploited.
Ho’ōla Nā Pua
Ho’ōla Nā Pua (New Life for Our Children) was founded to shine light on the dark criminal enterprise of sex trafficking, placing the health of youth at the center of their mission and vision for their community in Hawaii and beyond.
Ho’ōla Nā Pua is committed to the prevention of sex trafficking and providing care for children who have been exploited.
Ho’ōla Nā Pua (HNP) is dedicated to creating a community where children are safe and have the ability to embrace their bright futures. Today, not only does HNP offer integrated programming that reaches over thousands of youth and community members and stakeholders across the state of Hawaii annually, but is considered a national partner and a rising standard in the global effort to stop sex trafficking, permanently.
In spring 2021, Pearl Haven, a new program of Ho‘ōla Nā Pua, opened as a premier Special Treatment Facility (STF). Pearl Haven’s 32-bed, residential treatment program is the first of its kind in Hawaii and designed to provide trauma-informed therapeutic services for youth ages 11-17, who have complex trauma or are diagnosed with Serious Emotional and Behavioral Disturbances (SEBD) as a result of likely sexual exploitation or trafficking.
Ho‘ōla Nā Pua’s vision for Pearl Haven is to provide safety, reconnection and comprehensive behavioral health services for the youth in residence. With the specialized training of its faculty, the individualized treatment programs for each resident, and the healing therapeutic environment of its serene campus, Pearl Haven will transform lives by providing specialized services for our most vulnerable youth. As part of Ho‘ōla Nā Pua’s expansive community programs including its Hōkū Group Services and Starfish Mentoring, Pearl Haven provides a restorative experience, focusing not only on behavioral change, but also in addressing the core-root of an exploited youth’s trauma. The team uses a progressive and comprehensive treatment model committed to keeping youth stable while promoting sustained healing, recovery, and personal success as they reintegrate into society.
